Many collectors ask the question: why did the Royal Hungarian Post cling to a single series for sixteen years? The answer lies in the economic, political, and technical background of the era.
1. Conservative and Stable Visual Culture
At the beginning of the 20th century, most European postal administrations – including the Hungarian – were extremely conservative. Changing the stamp design was a rare and serious administrative step. The Turul as a symbol worked perfectly:
- it was a national symbol,
- it remained politically neutral,
- it functioned as a long-term, stable graphic element.
2. Designed as a Definitive Series
The literature (such as the works of Károly Horváth or the publications of the Stamp Museum) points out that the Post was not looking for a temporary solution. They wanted a definitive series that covered all denominations, was technically modern (could be updated with new watermarks and plates), and would not quickly become outdated.
3. Economic Rationality
Stamp design and the production of new clichés were extremely expensive processes. They would have required new plates, proof prints, and authorisation procedures. Continuous reprinting of the existing series was orders of magnitude cheaper and more efficient under the Post's strict budget.
4. Flexible Reprinting
The problem of „running out” never arose, because the series was continuously produced in multiple printing works, with multiple plate states and watermarks. The Post could thus replenish stocks at any time without having to resort to a new design.
5. Wartime Constraints Brought the Change
Ultimately, the reason for the change was not aesthetic but wartime-related. By 1916, paper shortages, ink shortages, and inflation forced cost-cutting measures in printing, which paved the way for the simpler Harvester-Parliament series.
Interestingly, although the changeover began in 1916, the Turul remained in circulation for another year. Moreover, it was at this time that the 70 and 80 filler denominations were introduced, which due to their watermark are classified among the very last issues of the series.
