Preface

Stamp collecting is perhaps where history, a hobby and knowledge meet. Without an understanding of history, it is difficult to seek genuine value, and a lack of knowledge can cause us to overlook it. Turul stamps beautifully express and encompass a remarkable period of history. I created this catalogue to help collectors of every age. Even in today's digital world, holding a book or catalogue still has its charm. Although paper publications may seem to be going out of fashion, they are enjoying a renaissance in stamp collecting.

Many older collectors originally identified their favourite stamps from catalogue pages. New developments and artificial intelligence can assist us, yet catalogues and stamp collecting remain inseparable. I therefore designed this publication to be browsed on the website, while also allowing anyone to download, print and use it.

This publication focuses specifically on Hungarian Turul stamps. It also touches on perfins, postmarks and the occupation period. The data offers an insight into distinguishing stamps bearing the Turul design. I have not, however, covered rarer individual flaws in detail: these would require several volumes and extensive illustrations. Alongside the basic edition, I therefore plan supplementary volumes devoted to particular specialized varieties.

The catalogue continues to grow and be updated. Every supported copy helps make it possible to document new research findings, plate flaws and varieties.

Welcome to the world of Turul stamps!

Note

Every known watermarked plate flaw is documented. This denomination was also forged in lemon-yellow. It occurs in all watermark positions and was a commonly used stamp. In 1931, Marcel Bíró conducted an experiment with a quarter-sheet of unused, orange 3-fillér stamps, exposing them to summer sunlight for four months. No changes were detectable in the paper or the gum, yet the color of the stamp changed to a vivid lemon-yellow. This trial proved that light-sensitive pigments can be significantly altered under prolonged exposure to light.

Note

Smudged printing also occurs here, where the design is barely discernible. It is very rare but known for this denomination as well. Plate flaws are not documented. The rarest paper type occurs, used only for the first edition. 11½:15 perforation may occur, which was an experimental perforation. Perforation anomalies, e.g., stamps without sheet margins cut on different sides, are known for the 4, 5, 10, 25, and 35-fillér values. These are all truncated copies originating from stamp booklets. The 4-fillér does not occur in other vintages.

Note

This is the denomination with the largest printing run. It replaced the 4-fillér stamp in the postcard mailing rates. All kinds of plate flaws occur, and a stamp booklet was also produced for this denomination. An imperforate copy is also known, even in postally used condition. Among the 'digit errors' forged from genuine stamps, the 5-fillér is known. The red 5-fillér is also known as another color forgery.

The release and printing numbers refer to the 6-fillér stamps collectively. There are no precise individual data for each specific color. The first edition stamps could easily be confused with higher denominations of a similar color, so a new color was introduced. Ultimately, the last olive-greenish shade accompanied this denomination until the 1913 vintage. Plate flaws occur. The brown-toned 6-fillér stamps were also printed on thick, cardboard-like paper. We do not know of the violet-brown 6-fillér with 11½ perforation. Imperforate copies also occur.

The first edition stamps could easily be confused with higher denominations of a similar color, so a new color was introduced. Produced exclusively on 'y' (white) paper. All 8 watermark positions are known. Similar to the first Turul series, 'digit error' forgeries also entered commercial circulation here. The 5 and 10-fillér values are known. 5,896 copies of a stamp booklet were also produced for this denomination.

In 1906, printing plate replacements took place. The Type II stamp is also collectible for this denomination; perforation variations are not known. While more than 11 million copies were produced with the old 1904 perforation, only a little over 3.5 million were made with the new 15 perforation. Thus, it is about a quarter of the quantity. Although all 8 watermark positions may exist, not all of them have been found for the 12-fillér. This is the stamp with the fewest releases of the vintage.

Note

The release was produced on one type of thicker, smooth, uniform, white paper with the Type V watermark. Coinciding with the introduction of the 1908 dandy roll, the chemical treatment of the paper was discontinued. Given the high print run, it can be assumed that all kinds of printing errors and watermark fractures can be found in this common denomination. In theory, there was no stamp booklet, but if it is an early production, it might occur. Literature – Sándor Visnya's article – reports the stamp booklet with the 1908 watermark in both 5 and 10-fillér values. The state printing house did not produce stamp booklets in 1908. In the following year, however, 5 and 10-fillér booklets were printed again. If their production took place in January, or possibly early February, then the use of paper with the 1908 watermark is possible; otherwise, however, this is excluded.
